3 Ways to Minimize Cosmetic Surgery Incision Site Scars

First, always follow your doctor's orders to keep your incision site clean to help prevent infection. This can greatly minimize the chance of severe post-procedure scars. However, you can take other steps to reduce the chance of extremely dark or raised scars.

1. Protect the Incision Site From Sunlight

Are your breasts noticeably uneven? Asymmetry is a common issue that a plastic surgeon can correct. If one breast is fuller, higher, or just different than the other, take a look at what you need to know about asymmetry, aesthetics, and your options.

Why Are Some Breasts Asymmetrical?

Some women have symmetrical (the same on both sides) breasts - and others don't. Research published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that 88 percent of the study's participants had some degree of unevenness. Asymmetry may include different cup sizes, nipple position, overall position, or shape.

There isn't one universal cause for asymmetry. Slight asymmetry is a natural occurrence for some women. This means there is no specific underlying cause. If you suffer from a debilitating hand problem known as Dupuytren's contracture, everyday tasks requiring manual dexterity can pose immense challenges. While surgery can help many people plagued with this condition, conservative treatment methods, including Xiaflex injections, may remove the need for such surgery.

You'll have a clearer idea of how to treat your Dupuytren's contracture as successfully as possible once you gain a basic understanding of what Xiaflex injections involve, how they help, and when to consider this treatment approach over others. Start by reading the following questions and answers about Xiaflex.

What Does Xiaflex Treatment Involve?

Xiaflex, the brand name of a drug called collagenase clostridium histolyticum, works by using enzymes to break down abnormally thickened tissues in the body. Doctors use it for two primary purposes: to relieve Peyronie's disease (which causes a painful curvature of the penis) and a hand problem called Dupuytren's contracture.

In Dupuytren's contracture, the fascia (a connective tissue) beneath the palm of the hand grows unnaturally thick. You may feel modules in the affected palm or fingers, followed by tough cords of tissue that eventually cause your fingers to contract inward into a claw-like configuration.

A plastic surgeon can use Xiaflex to relieve some cases of Dupuytren's contracture by injecting this medication directly into the affected tissues. The enzymes in the drug then go to work breaking down the excess tissue until your fingers resume their former flexibility.

Why Might You Choose Xiaflex Over Other Dupuytren's Contracture Treatments?

Dupuytren's contracture sufferers often undergo hand surgery such as fasciotomy (division of the thickened cords) and subtotal palmar fasciectomy (partial removal of the cords). However, doctors generally recommend these invasive procedures only after conservative treatments have failed to loosen the fascia in the hand.

What Should You Expect From a Xiaflex Injection?

In this outpatient procedure, your plastic surgeon will inject the Xiaflex into a troublesome cord of tissue and then wrap the treated hand with gauze. You'll receive instructions to come back to the office within one to three days for a follow-up evaluation. You can safely receive up to three such injections, each one month apart.

Immediately following the injection, you'll want to keep the treated hand elevated and resist the urge to flex your fingers. After your follow-up exam, you'll receive a night splint to wear on your hand for up to four months. You'll also need to perform gentle exercises to regain the desired range of motion in your fingers.

Common side effects from Xiaflex injections include bruising, swelling, and discomfort at the treatment site. Some people may also develop swollen lymph nodes under the arm or at the elbow. While these side effects should pass without incident, inform your doctor if you develop an infection or experience nerve problems.

Before the Procedure

Brachioplasty: The Arm Lift Procedure And Ideal Candidates

Brachioplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure classified under body contouring. The procedure is performed on the arms and is also colloquially known as an arm lift. Brachioplasty aims to remove excess tissue from the underside of the upper arm to produce a more toned appearance. Often, this appearance is impossible even with a consistent diet and exercise because of skin laxity.

Ideal Candidates for Brachioplasty

Some people are predisposed to loose skin or extra tissue in the upper arm area. The condition can also result from the aging process. As people age, their skin becomes less elastic. As gravity takes over, the upper arm skin starts to sag. Brachioplasty can help.

Prime candidates for brachioplasty are people who have lost a lot of weight. Indeed, the procedure is common after weight loss surgery. The excess fat has left the skin with decreased elasticity, so it can't bounce back after the weight loss.

Arm Lift Procedure

The exact steps of the procedure depends on the patient's arms. In some cases, the doctor may only have to make a small incision near the armpit. If the arms feature an excess of skin and fatty tissue, the doctor may have to make a longer incision from the underarm to the elbow. Placement may be in the inner arm or back of the arm.

During the procedure, the doctor removes excess skin and even fat. If needed, the doctor will also use internal sutures to reshape the underlying supporting tissue. Once the skin has been smoothed over the arm, the doctor closes the incision.

Post-Procedure Care

Immediately after the surgery, your arms will be draped loosely in bandages. You may even have a tube for drainage. You can typically go home quickly after the procedure.

In the next few days after the procedure, your doctor will likely recommend you wear compressive garments to minimize swelling and to support the healing process. You may have to return to the clinic for a follow-up examination and to have the tube or sutures removed. Your doctor will inform you of any special post-care procedures to observe.

For at least a few days, you may need to take over-the-counter pain medication, though your doctor may prescribe prescription-strength pain relievers. You shouldn't lift your arms above your shoulders for at least three weeks. You should also limit any physical activities that might stretch the incisions for several weeks after the procedure.

Brachioplasty Risks

Any procedure carries risks. The risks associated with brachioplasty are rare. They include the following:

Raised, red scarring
Asymmetrical arm shapes
Changed skin sensation

Expectations for the Arm Lift

Brachioplasty does leave a scar at the incision site. However, as the skin heals, the scar becomes flatter and much lighter. At the end, most patients are left with a small line.

The Do's and Don'ts of Exercise After Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction helps women with large breasts and decreases their back pain. However, this surgery requires significant recovery time, during which you may be unable to do many things that you love, such as exercise. Use the four tips below to determine the exercises you can do during recovery and what you should probably avoid.

Do: Walk Every Day

After you have recovered from the initial impact of your surgery, your doctor may suggest regular walks in your neighborhood. Walks provide the least strenuous type of exercise and put almost no strain on your chest or breasts. Just as importantly, walks improve your blood flow and help your body’s tissues and muscles recover.

You'll likely be limited to walks for at least three to four weeks after your surgery, so plan out a route that feels comfortable to you. Start with walks that just barely tire you and slowly increase your walk time and the intensity of each walk. In this way, you can prepare your body for more strenuous routines.

Breast augmentation, or mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to augment, or increase, your breast size. If you are considering breast augmentation surgery, take care of yourself during your recovery period to reduce your risk of complications.

In addition to increasing breast size, an augmentation can help correct asymmetry and drooping, and enhance breast contour. Here are three things to avoid after your breast augmentation.

A Diet Low in Vitamin C and Protein

A diet low in vitamin C and protein can raise your risk for post-operative complications. Eat more vitamin C and protein-rich foods to help promote healing after your breast augmentation. Vitamin C is essential for optimal collagen formation and reducing infection risk, while protein helps enhance wound healing.

Do you feel as though your ears stick out too far? Perhaps you've always assumed there is nothing you can do about your protruding ears now that you're an adult. Ear pinning, after all, is a procedure most commonly performed on young children. However, while ear pinning may not be as common in adults, you can still have your ears surgically altered, regardless of your age.

Otoplasty, or ear pinning, is a rather simple procedure. However, most patients do have a few concerns as they consider having their ears altered.

Will You Be Put Under Anesthesia?

Many people find the idea of being put under general anesthesia scary. The good news is that, in most cases when performed on adults, otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia only. Your ear and the area around your ear will be numbed with an injection, and you may be given a sedative to calm your nerves, but you will remain awake throughout the procedure.

Otoplasty only takes one to two hours. Your doctor will observe you for an hour or two after the surgery, and then a friend or family member can drive you home.

How Much Time Will You Need to Take Off From Work?

3 Things to Do Before Your Body Contouring Surgery

After spending months or even years working to achieve your goal weight, it is disheartening to have a layer of loose, flabby skin covering up your new body. Breast augmentation tops the list as the most common cosmetic surgical procedure of 2017, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. If you're about to become one of the more than 300,000 women who choose augmentation annually, understanding how it affects your breasts as a whole is important.

Beyond the obvious size increase, take a look at the other potential post-surgery changes that you may notice.

Higher Nipples

Satisfaction with nipple placement is a major factor in how patients respond to their new post-surgery breasts. Immediately after surgery it may seem like your nipples are much higher up on your breasts than they were before. Understanding the Surgery Options for Skin Cancer Removal

Skin cancer cells need to be removed to keep them from spreading. Once it's determined that you have skin cancer, you have a few different surgical options for removal. Understanding what's involved in the different options for surgery may make the procedure a little less scary.

Curettage and Electrodesiccation

For skin cancer that doesn't go very deep into the skin, one of the quickest and easiest treatments is for the doctor to use a curette, which has a sharp cutting loop at one end, to scrape away the cancer-containing skin after using a topical anesthetic. Then an electric needle is used to help kill any cancer cells left and help seal the wound.

Cryosurgery

Another option for treating smaller areas of skin cancer is cryosurgery. The doctor applies liquid nitrogen to freeze the skin containing the cancer cells, which then scabs and falls off in approximately one week. Repeat treatments may be necessary, and the skin may appear different than the surrounding skin after healing.

Surgical Excision

For larger or deeper areas of skin cancer, surgical excision may be necessary. Typically, an elliptical area around the cancer cells will be surgically removed and then closed with stitches. Some healthy tissue is removed to make it more likely all the cancer cells are removed. Only local anesthetic is needed in this outpatient procedure.

Laser Surgery

In some cases, the doctor will use a laser to remove the cancer cells. Laser surgery tends to work best in areas that are particularly sensitive because it is usually less painful and heals more quickly. The heat from the laser seals the wound, so you don't usually need stitches and any scar will be less noticeable.

Mohs Surgery

In areas where you want to minimize the loss of healthy skin, such as on the face, surgeons may use a technique called Mohs surgery. It takes longer than regular excisions because the doctor removes just a thin layer at a time, stopping in between each layer to check for cancer cells. When no more cancer cells are found, the surgery is completed.

Lymph Node Surgery

If skin cancer isn't caught quickly, it may spread. The doctor may check your lymph nodes for swelling, as this is a sign of cancer moving from the skin and spreading to other parts of the body. If some swelling is present, the doctor may do a biopsy to look for affected cells or even put you under general anesthesia to remove any affected lymph nodes.

Skin Grafting

If you have a very large area of skin affected by skin cancer, it may not be possible for the skin around the excision to stretch and be stitched back together. In this case, the doctor may need to graft some skin from somewhere else less noticeable on your body over the area. Catching cancer early minimizes the need to do this.

Having breasts that are not equal in size or shape is a common malady: in fact, many women who undergo surgical procedures on their breasts do so due to noticeable asymmetry. It's rare for breasts to ever be fully identical, although slight differences in breast tissue from one breast to the other is often negligible.

Breast tissue is made up of milk ducts, lobes, fatty tissue, and other matter and it's extremely common for breasts (and nipples) to be uneven in appearance. However, a lot of the so-called information that gets passed along about liposuction is more myth than fact. 1. Liposuction Is Not a Ticket to Permanent Weight Loss

The symptoms that accompany carpal tunnel syndrome such as weakness and tingling in your hand are often managed with conservative methods that may include wearing a brace or using medication. While this works for some people, you may find that your symptoms get worse over time.

Typically, people whose symptoms do not get better with non-surgical methods or those who find that their ability to perform normal activities is compromised for more than six months become candidates for carpal tunnel surgery. Once you know that hand surgery is your best treatment option, use these tips to prepare for the procedure and recovery period.

1. Identify Your Surgery Options

There are two main types of surgery that are done to correct the conditions that associate with carpal tunnel syndrome, and the best choice for you is based upon a variety of factors such as the severity and cause of your condition.

What You Should Know About Dupuytren's Contracture

You may have been experiencing ongoing problems with stiffness or discomfort in your hand and have visited your doctor, only to find out that you have a little-known condition called Dupuytren's contracture. Though a diagnosis may be a relief, you likely want to know more about this mysterious condition.

Get to know some of the facts about Dupuytren's contracture so you can make the best decisions regarding treatment and care going forward.

What Is Dupuytren's Contracture?

Dupuytren's contracture is a condition of the hand occurring in the tissues of the palm. Small knots or balls form in the tissue underneath the skin of the palm first. Eventually, as the disease progresses, those knots form a band across the palm.

This band of hardened tissue ultimately affects the fingers as well. It causes the muscles that extend through the palm to the fingers to stay contracted. This can, in turn, make the fingers of the hand remain permanently bent and unable to straighten fully.

Dupuytren's contracture is not a condition that occurs all at once. The fingers, for example, will become increasingly difficult to straighten over time. They will also eventually become more bent as the band of hardened tissue forms in the palm.

What Causes Dupuytren's Contracture?

Medical professionals are unsure as to the causes of Dupuytren's contracture. There is little evidence that it is connected with injuries to the hands or with certain types of manual labor.

However, doctors do know that males over 40 are more likely to have Dupuytren's contracture than any other demographic group. If a person is of Northern European descent, they may also be more likely to suffer from the condition.

How Can You Treat and Manage Dupuytren's Contracture?

There are many ways that Dupuytren's contracture can be treated and managed, depending on the severity of the condition. When Dupuytren's contracture is mild, for example, there may be no treatments necessary aside from monitoring and self-care

You can care for your hand at home by exercising your hand and performing self-tests to determine the progress of the condition. This self-test is known as the tabletop test and merely involves trying to lay your palm and fingers flat on a table. The more your hand is bent, the more severe your Dupuytren's contracture.

When cases are more severe and the function of the hand is impaired, more aggressive treatments can be performed. One such treatment is known as needling. This treatment requires a doctor to use small needles to puncture the hardened band of tissue, causing the muscles in your fingers to contract. The needles are meant to break up the band, relieving the pressure on those muscles.

Another minimally-invasive treatment option for Dupuytren's contracture is an injection treatment. Your physician would inject a solution containing the enzyme collagenase clostridium histolyticum. The injections are done directly into the band of hardened tissue in your palm.

This enzyme contains proteins that will attack the cells in the band, breaking it up and helping to loosen it enough that the muscles in the hand can better function. These injection treatments are a two-part process – you first receive the injection and then follow up with your doctor 24 hours later to stretch the hand and further break down the band of tissue.

In the most severe cases of Dupuytren's contracture, or in those that do not respond to conservative treatments, surgery is the best option. This surgical option involves your hand surgeon removing the palm tissue affected by this condition.

Depending on the amount of affected tissue, the skin on your palm may also need to be removed, which would require skin grafting as well. Following surgery, physical therapy is often necessary. However, the benefits of surgery last longer than other options and can make a greater difference in your hand function.
